Wizard101: Postcards from the Spiral – Five Questions with Professor Lydia Greyrose

Christina IceDreamer & Professor Lydia Greyrose
This week I achieved a long-treasured dream. No, I was not able to oust Mindy Pixiecrown as Professor Greyrose’s student assistant. But I WAS able to conduct an interview with my favorite professor on some of the things that most intrigue me about life as a Thaumaturge.
Christina IceDreamer: Personally, one of my favorite Ice School spells is Steal Ward. For the uninitiated, this is a two-pip spell which not only takes away a shield from your enemy; it equips YOU with the shield that is stolen. My friend Fallon MoonGem and I are having a debate on the order in which the spell steals shields (if multiple shields are present). She says the shields are removed in the order in which they were cast by the enemy (first cast is first stolen). I think that they are stolen in order of which is most protective of the enemy (as in, Absorb Shield would be stolen before Ice Shield). Will you please settle the dispute for us?
Professor Greyrose: That’s a very good question young Wizard! I’m sure that there are many players who are wondering the same thing, and I’m happy to let you know that they are stolen in the reverse order that they are put up. So if the enemy casts an Ice Shield, then a Fire Shield, and you cast a Steal Ward, the first ward to be stolen will be Fire Shield.
Christina IceDreamer: The Tower Shield is truly genius and another top reason to enroll in the school of Ice. Quite simply, it is one of only two shields which protects against Balance spells (the other being the Absorb Shield, which costs three pips to cast whereas Tower is a zero-pip spell). Any insight into the origin of the spell and how it came to be exclusive to the Ice school?
Professor Greyrose: Ice school is about protection and being able to take a lot of damage. Tower Shield is arguably THE best protection spell. Therefore, it is in the school of Ice.
Christina IceDreamer: What is the most popular secondary school for Ice?
Professor Greyrose: While I don’t have specific numbers on what players choose to learn outside of the school of Ice, I often see young Wizards who have chosen its opposite: Fire. Ice allows students to take a lot of damage while fire lets them dish out a lot of damage over time.
Christina IceDreamer: Which school, in your opinion, is the most complimentary for Ice?
Professor Greyrose: Ice school isn’t for everyone; it takes patience and strategy to succeed as an Ice Wizard. Ice has the highest health, medium accuracy and low damage. Since Ice allows students to stand their ground for a long time before they heal, any high damage school would be a good compliment to Ice.
Christina IceDreamer: If you had to pick a different school to teach, which would it be and why? No fair saying Myth because you know you would be nicer to students than Cyrus Drake.
Professor Greyrose: Cyrus is a big teddy bear, don’t let him scare you. He’s tough on students because deep down he really wants them to be strong, and if they cannot be strong enough to handle his criticisms, then they will not be strong enough to control the Myth minions they summon.
Should I ever retire from the school of Ice, I’d probably be a guidance counselor. I enjoy listening to students and helping to guide them through their studies. Then again…Ambrose does have a nice office…
WELL, it seems that I owe Fallon MoonGem an iced coffee because I was, in fact, wrong about the Steal Ward spell. But it was worth being proven wrong to have my questions answered straight from the source! Thank you Professor Greyrose for your time and dedication to the school of Ice and to the students of Wizard 101!
READERS: A little pixie told me that I might be able to conduct similar “Five Question” interviews with other professors in the future. Just in case…What questions would you like to ask about your favorite school? Please contact me via e-mail. Any question you send me will likely be featured on my Twitter feed. Fallon ShadowBlade and I will pick the top five questions for each school and publish interviews as soon as we can!
Until next time … may none of your Freezes be fizzles!
